What's the big deal with event gamification?

If you’re an avid reader of our blog, you would have heard us talking about gamification and the impact it has been making in the events management industry.

And if you’re not in the know, this article will give you a sneak peek into why event planners all over the world are raving about gamification.

What is Gamification?

Gamification involves introducing elements of gaming and competition into your event. Essentially, you’re turning your event into a competitive game – where audience members can earn points by performing actions such as:

  • Answering speakers’ questions

  • Taking part in surveys

  • Asking questions

  • Voting or liking items/answers/topics

  • Taking photos (and sharing them on social media networks)

  • Connecting with other participants

  • Checking in at various times of the day

  • Accomplishing any other tasks set up by the event organiser

“But.. that sounds like pandemonium!!"

If you’re wondering about the amount of coordination, manpower and paperwork involved to handle the thousands of questions, answers and activities that come with a gamified event, and are pulling your hair out in angst – don’t worry, you won’t need to do a thing.

Not if you have an event app (such as PowerVote’s Event App), that is.

Each copy of the app, downloaded into a participant’s mobile device, is like personal assistant hired specifically to follow that person around for the entire duration of the event – notifying them of upcoming activities, keeping them up to date on the agenda, connecting them with other participants, handing them presentation slides and of course, taking down notes of every single question asked, answer given, photo taken, vote made, chat recorded and click done.

All the while, this “personal assistant” updates event organisers of these actions and works together with the hundreds or thousands of other “personal assistants” at the event, collecting information given by each participant.

This information is compiled into a live leaderboard, so at every second of the day, event organisers and participants always know who’s ahead of the game (and who needs to work harder to surge into first place).

At the end of the gamified event, those handy little apps feed this incredible amount of information to the PowerVote team, so they can present you with the perfect post-event present – a comprehensive report with lots of those incredible, juicy and invaluable analytics that you can then use to sell, improve your products/service with, and to plan your next event.
